Energy Tapping: The Stress Eraser for Children
The Stress Eraser—you have it right at your fingertips! Here is a great explanation for children: “Think of it this way. The pencils are your fingers and the erasers are your fingertips. While we tap on certain points on the face and upper body, we actually erase the stress, anger, sadness, or other negative feelings or emotions we have at the time. How cool is that!”
Now for a more grown-up explanation: “Energy tapping involves acknowledging the negative emotion or issue, followed by a positive self-statement. While staying focused on the emotion/issue, you tap on different meridian points located on the upper body. It is as easy as it sounds.”
Remember the best way to get your classroom to develop the habit of tapping is to do it yourself. Be the change you wish to see in your children! Take the time (2 minutes) every morning or afternoon (or both) to pause and tap with your class. Call it P.A.T. (PAUSE-and-TAP.) Developing this habit will help balance out energy patterns and get rid of any “negative” feelings or emotions you or your class may be feeling. It could be that a recent incident has triggered a negative disruption. Why not clear it before it has a chance to grow!
Children and teens respond very well to tapping as it's easy to do, a little bit silly, fun and breaks the tension in the air. As well it helps them regulate their emotions in regard to negative situations or issues. Tapping is also great for you, their teacher!
The biggest deterrent I find people have to tapping is that they feel like they don’t know what to say. For a morning or afternoon routine, try something as simple as the following statements. (You can replace saying "kid" with person, child, etc.)
Morning: “Even though I’m really tired this morning, I’m a great kid and I’m going to have an awesome day!” Afternoon: “Even though I had a rough day, I’m a great kid and I love me for who I am.”
You don’t have to state a negative if there isn’t one, but it is still a good idea to tap. It will help with any obstacles or issues that may come up and it is easier to develop a habit if you tap regularly. (Remember, it is said that it takes 21 days to develop a healthy habit!)
Try the following tapping statements as maintenance!
Morning: “I’m in a good mood and am a great kid and am going to have an awesome day!” Afternoon: “I had an amazing day today and accept me for who I am, just the way I am!”
If you are preparing your class for a test or if they have to do a presentation, tapping is a wonderful way to settle any nervousness amongst your students.
So don’t forget your daily P.A.T. and get ready to eradicate those negative blahs in your classroom with your fingertip erasers!
